31 Ways to Self-Care
Hello, I'm Andrea Joyce, and I'm the author of 31 Ways to Self-Care. I wrote this book because I learned the hard way that if you don't care for yourself, you won't be any good for anyone else. You cannot pour anything out of an empty pot — and I had been pouring for a long, long time.
The sections of this book are called chapters — not days. There is no schedule here and no deadline. This is a self-guided journal, with questions inside it for you to answer, and you answer them honestly, at your own pace. You can start anywhere. Come back in six months and the same chapter will read differently, because you will be different — and that is exactly how it should work.
On this page you'll find every chapter with its video beside it. Watch one, sit with it, answer the questions. Self-care matters, and it should be your priority — every day.
Introduction
A self-guided journal
01
Chapter
The first step in taking care of you is knowing who you are now — take time at the mirror, keep it positive, and see who you have become.
02
Chapter
A daily check-up with yourself — sit still, grab a journal and a pen, and ask how you honestly feel, before small feelings grow.
03
Chapter
One of the hardest things we do in life is let go of guilt, blame and shame — but releasing them is how you move forward.
04
Chapter
Holding a grudge keeps you dipped in lemon juice, as I say — this chapter is about setting it down, for you.
05
Chapter
Two traps keep us stuck — living in the glory days, or living in old trauma — and this chapter helps you step out of both.
06
Chapter
Opportunities come when you're willing and open for change — a job, a vocation, a business plan, or simply being open to what's next.
07
Chapter
Prayer as a conversation — not only talking, but listening too. Give your burdens to the One who can actually carry them.
08
Chapter
Sit up but let yourself be loose. Set your atmosphere, clear your mind, and give five minutes to your breathing — the whole world can wait.
09
Chapter
Start where you are. You do what you can do until you can do better — a walk counts, and it is not only about weight.
10
Chapter
Not a fad for a quick five pounds — a life change. Eat more vegetables, eat less of the fat, and ask your doctor or a nutritionist what fits your body.
11
Chapter
Learning keeps you young. A free word of the day, a low-cost class, or the thing you always meant to try — keep your knowledge current.
12
Chapter
Feed yourself positive messages, uproot the negative ones, and know your worth — you are a jewel locked in the vault.
13
Chapter
Drinking water daily matters — I'll tell you how I learned to love it, and how much is right for your body is a talk for your doctor or nutritionist.
14
Chapter
Take time out for you — push away from the desk, take your breaks, and let down your hair for a few minutes.
15
Chapter
Don't wait for anyone else to pat you on the back — celebrate your victories, big or small, at least once a month.
16
Chapter
If you're burnt out, you can't help anyone else — find something fun that refreshes you and gives you a chance to breathe.
17
Chapter
Savor the steak, savor the moments — stop autopiloting through your life and become a participant in it, not an observer.
18
Chapter
Sometimes our purpose is buried in our passion — ask yourself the questions that find it, and don't put yourself in a box.
19
Chapter
Sleep and rest are two different things — you can go to sleep and not be rested, so give your body what it actually needs.
20
Chapter
The first nineteen chapters fill you up so you have something to pour out — now give your time, talent and treasure, and keep it to yourself.
21
Chapter
Don't self-diagnose and don't let it slide — go get examined; I tell you why from my own experience.
22
Chapter
You can't fly if they're hanging on to your tail feathers — confront what needs confronting, then release what needs releasing.
23
Chapter
Not a bucket list — a self-care list of things you can actually do in the next two months, and it has to be what YOU want.
24
Chapter
Some cleaning is on the inside — ask yourself what's in there that needs cleaning, and let it go.
25
Chapter
Seasonal friends, lifetime friends, and being careful with your heart — find your people, and be a friend worth having.
26
Chapter
Laughter does your heart good and soothes your soul — aim to laugh a couple of times a day, not just smile.
27
Chapter
Give them their flowers while they are alive — family is wider than blood, and you don't need a whole reunion to take time with yours.
28
Chapter
Not everyone can take a vacation — everyone can take a staycation. However you choose to travel, please just travel.
29
Chapter
Take five minutes a day to shut it all down and ask, 'who am I today?' — it centres you like prayer does.
30
Chapter
It's not selfish to care for yourself — please don't feel guilty. And the fun fund makes it fit a real budget.
31
Chapter
Thank God for something, be grateful for something, bless people — and try a gratitude jar for the rough days.
32
Chapter
Diffusing is my personal wind-down ritual — I'll share the oils I reach for and what they do for me, as my own experience only.
That's the series — thirty-two chapters, and every one of them is yours to take at your own pace. You can start anywhere, and you can start today.
